Question

Smoothing out back of RG neck?

The back of my RG neck has a few nicks on it and was wondering if there is anything I can do to smooth them out without really changing the thickness of the neck. I'm assuming extra fine sandpaper? Anyone have experience doing this? Thanks!

if it is unfinished use a wet cloth and a hot iron, like the one to iron your clothing. That will swell up the wood fibers after that a light sanding and refinishing and it should be hopefully better than before. If it is finished you will ruin the paint.

Re: Smoothing out back of RG neck?

I refinished an RG570 neck a few weeks ago with amazing results.

I removed the clear coat to give it a matt finish, which in turn removed all the nicks.

Sand it down with 600 grit sandpaper, then onces the coating is off, move up to a much finer grit, all the way to 1500.

Once thats done, apply some tung oil, just rub it on, leave for 30 seconds, and rub it back off. Give it another coat, and remove it. This should give the neck a little protection.

I then did the same procedure that Music Man do on their necks, I applied some Gunstock Oil, just rub it on, leave it for a minutes, and then remove.

Make sure you clean the neck till its smooth and dry.

A few days later you'll probably have to sand it down a little to get rid of a rough texture, but once thats done the neck will feel incredible.

Make sure you dont get any oil on the fretboard, i masked mine off when i did this. Good luck!

I used 0000 steel wool on my 2620, it's nice and smooth now.
