Something wrong with my 2027 neck - Finish on back beginning

This is a little weird. *There is some type of finish on my 2027, on the back of the neck...I don't like the feel of it as much as my completely raw UV, but it isn't all that bad. *At any rate, in certain spots it is beginning to feel a little rough or fuzzy even. *Looking at the spots you can't see anything abnormal, but you can certainly feel it. *Is the Finish coming off in those areas? *If I take some steel wool to it, can I get it to feel like my UV or am I asking for trouble? *Anybody know what is going on here? *I play it quite a bit, but only average about an hour a night on it, much more on the weekends and I don't sweat that much. *I always wash my hands prior to playing and wipe it down thoroughly when I'm done (I hate changing strings).

Sounds like the clear coat is breaking down for some reason or another.

I wouldn't recommend using steel wool since it will degrade the surface of the wood as you run it across and of course the flakes from the pad will lodge into the grain giving you dark streaks.

Your best bet even though it takes a little more effort is one of the newer style sanding sponges that can be purchased at any home improvment center or hardware store. They come in a variety of grades and will fit the contour of the back of your neck more evenly as you take the finish off.

Remember when using them to occasionaly pound the sanding surface of the pad down on a hard surface to release the build up which occurs on the face of these pads. This will give it a longer life and make it easier for you to use. If you have an air compressor you can blow the buildup off as well.

OK, I sanded all the finish off the back of my 2027...only one problem

WHY DIDN'T I DO THIS SOONER!?!?!?!?!

I had no idea it would make that much difference in the way the guitar feels. *

Because just like so many other people it does take something to get over the "hope I don't mess it up" syndrome along with the "I can't believe I'm putting sand paper to my baby" LOL....

Now you'll probably do it to all of your guitars....

Do you need to re-finish the back of the neck after sanding it down with some clear coat?

Only if you feel like it cause it isn't necessary.

Of course the wood will absorb any oils off of your hands and darken eventually with age..

Applying a finish would have just gotten me back to where I started. *I wanted it bare...just like my UV. *Although now this bare 2027 neck is smoother and silkier than my UV neck. *Time to smooth that one out now!!!
