something you 7-stringers may want to try - getting the ever

well, in my journey known as tonequest, i am trying so desparately to get my UV to sound like my 7v. *and you say, why not just play the 7v? *is the low B that important? *nope, not at all. *but it is my quest and i do not question it. *(basically, i hate for "vai's guitar" to be my main axe, and i want the UV to be my end all and be all player with perfect tone and playability -- and im really bored and have nothing better to do). *i have tried every 7-string pickup that dimarzio makes, and i came up with the evo7 and the paf7. *but they still lacked something. *they didnt have the openness of the evos in the 7v and lacked the harmonic response. *i talked to steve blucher at dimarzio and he suggested that i replace my tone and volume pots with 1 mega-ohm value instead of 500k. *did it and it sounded like a wah pedal on full open. *so i started screwin around with the idea and now have a 500k on the volume and a 1mega on the tone with the standard .022 cap. *i am in the process of experimenting with different values of caps on the tone and havent yet gotten to really crank it to try out the tone because my wife is sleeping -- but from what i can tell at room volume, i think i have found the answer. *with a roll of the tone control i can go from crunchy blaze II to warm harmonically rich evo. *the 500k on the volume is keeping it warm while the 1meg on the tone is allowing much more variance and higher output. *anyway, i just thought id share what im doing in case anyone has any ideas on expanding on this. *i will give report of cranked tone tomorrow.

Sounds cool..

I've been running 1meg volume pots, with the tone disconnected, in all my guitars for a few years now.. It's bright as he||, but I love it.. Definitely a worthwhile mod to try..

Hope it sounds as good for you at higher volumes..

I was probably thinking of upgrading the volume and tone knobs to 1mega ohm as well but I was wondering how the evo7 on the bridge and blaze custom on the neck would sound on the universe. How much brighter would a 1meg volume pot do for this setup?

the evo and paf7 are very very VERY bright with the 1 meg pots -- i went to 500k volume and 1 meg tone and i still cant get it to warm up enough. *it has great output, basically awesome except it just isnt warm enough. *but the 1 meg in both volume and tone was just insane, it sounded like a wah pressed all the way down.
