square heel old rg neck question

hi i was taking a guitar apart and noticed it was together wrong i think. on the old rg neck heels the neck plate plastic piece is the part on the plastic that sticks out [about one eight inch thick] go towards the body or away? also i think the screws were in wrong the long ones go on the right side looking at the back of the guitar right?

away, the metal plate fits inside of the plastic. the side of the body that curves in (treble side of neck) and is thinner takes the shorter screws.
