Really depends on your luck.

Living in hong kong, most people are lazy, and therefore, the terms "hardware store" and "Do it yourself" are inexistent.

On a holiday to australia, i went in search of steel wool. First hardware store i visited had it, but was out of stock. Second hardware store didnt have any at all, even after asking the sales assistants. found some in a large supermarket, but it wasnt 0000 grade, and i wasnt going to push my chances.

so in the end, i have no steel wool, and oxidized frets.

just put masking tape on the fretboard around the frets, that will protect the finish

depends on how anal you are about how shiney n purty it is i have an older guitar with a clear coated maple fretboard, but since its older the clear coat is getting sticky and uncomfortable. so i took steel wool to the neck and fretboard and frets, makes the finish dull, not really shiney anymore, but it feels great. ill put some fresh clearcoat on when i get around to refinishing the guitar
