stretching strings
Hi,
After you restring you have to stretch it. My question is when you stretch the strings do you have to lock the nuts?
Seems like a very simple question but no one really talks about this.

Re: stretching strings
I think you guys are wrong when you say not to lock the nut. If you don't, when you stretch the strings, instead of actually stretching them, you could in fact "unwind" them at the
tuning pegs
.
That link to ibanezrules doesn't mention locking the nut or leaving it unlocked either.

Re: stretching strings
It shouldn't have to be specified the nut is unlocked. You're constantly stretching and retuning, not locking, stretching, unlocking, retuning, locking, stretching......
Regular nut guitars don't lock, no difference in procedure though.

Re: stretching strings
It's weird because I just changed from D'Addario 10's to
Ernie Ball
10's and, not only did I not stretch out the
Ernie Balls
, but: a) the Ernie Balls feel FANTASTIC and b) the guitar stays perfectly in tune.
I guess stretching has a lot to do with the particular instrument.

Re: stretching strings
Unlock the them, the entire purpose of "
string stretching
" is to make the string as tight as possible around the tuning post. When you "stretch strings" what you are really doing is "seating strings" at the tuning post and bridge. The tighter the wind, and the fewer the wraps(3-4 max) around the post stabilizes tuning.
