stretching strings


hi folks.this might sound a stupid question coming from someone playing guitar for 14 years,STRETCHING STRINGS e,a,d, (wound strings) no probs there easy stretched.(never broke one yet)but g,b,e, ive broken loads of these.how is this avoided do you have to stretch g,b,e.if i dont stretch g,b,e will i have tuning probs..thanks folks rob.

Instead of pulling up on the strings, something I do is apply pressure from left to right (parallel to the frets), and I apply counterpressure, stretching in one direction with my thumb/index finger and the other with my badmotherfinger, ring finger, and pinky.
