String Gauge Problem

So I was thinking about this while reading waylay00's thread. I really like using 9's but they break too easily for me so i switched to 10's. Do I have my guitar set up wrong or do 9's normally break that easily. Vai uses 9's and he does some insane stuff without breaking them. So what am I doing wrong?

And for all you guys who use 9's, how long do your strings usually last???????

You probaly have a burr on the saddle.

How do I get rid of it, just sand it down with a fine grain?

Very fine wet sand paper would be preferable. I'm talking like 6000 grit, which still won't take long to ease it out unless the saddle's completely ****ed.
