Thumbs up

Re: String Tension Charts

Dee, I just want to thank you. Whether I agree or disagree with eveything that you've said is beside the point. You've made me rethink my gauge choice, and I think that makes this whole thread priceless. Good show!, from across the pond.

Re: String Tension Charts

I'm gonna tell you a problem my guitar have. I get lot of fret buzz yesterday. First I didn't get whats happening. And today I change my strings to old ones (They're little bit newer) because I don't have a new set right now.

When I changed the strings too much string tension there. I don't mean spring settings. No, bridge is in same position as before (didn't touch) and guitar is tuned properly. Then I adjust the truss rod.

Now, everything looks ok but when I play I just feel like I'm playing with 13 gauge strings. I'm gonna get new set of strings tomorrow. I hope it will fix when I change strings to the new ones.

Re: String Tension Charts

Hi Jem7. I don't understand why this is happening! What brand and gauge strings are you using?

Re: String Tension Charts

Is the action too high since you adjusted the truss rod? The only thing I can suggest is taking it to a local guitar tech. It might be a good idea to start a new thread about it, too. This way you'll get more help from the other members here.

Re: String Tension Charts

No, Action isnt too high i adusted it.
Local guitar tech is good idea too but i have no money for it. But maybe i can go and ask him whats the problem. Maybe he tell me.

Well, I noticed the tension is little softer now. Not as before but little bit softer .
But I push the trem hardly. I don't think its about back spring beacause bridge is still flat position. Maybe deformed knife edge.

Starting new threat is good idea too. I'm gonna wait few days and start new thread if its not ok.

Re: String Tension Charts

Hey Dee - I've got another one for you. Well, really just one extra string. I'm thinking of putting a set of Ernie Ball 11-54's. They're 11,15,22,30,42,52. From what I've read in this thread, you've already posted tensions for all of 'em except the unwound 22 for the G string.

Re: String Tension Charts

Ok, so I recently went to the local guitar shop in need of some Ernie Ball 10's (I haven't yet tried a customized set, but I'll do it the next time I changing my strings, I promise D)). Unfortunately, they sold them all out. Instead, they gave this same package but the 7-string version and left out the 7th string. Now, I'm looking at the package and it seems their 7th string is only a 56 . WTF!? I'm not a 7-string man myself. Well, at least not yet, but according to your charts that's just inhumane. I mean, I've heard of those strings coming in sets too floppy but this is just ridiculous! Now, I know this subject has been talked about many many times, especially on the sevenstring.org forum. For heavens sake, doesn't anyone at EB, etc. know about this issue? Therefore, I propose some kind of a petition or something. Goddamit! When I'll be buying my 7string packages, I don't want to be forced the buy at least one extra string (which btw isn't all that easy to find here! at least not a 68 ) and throw a completely useful string away every time I buy my strings. That's just mad.
Sorry for the long post. I just had to react when I saw this.

Re: String Tension Charts

Dee,

I'm really interested in trying a custom set for my own 7 string, but I tune in drop A (the 1st 6 strings are standard and the low B is dropped down to A). Where would I find this information on the tension of strings so I can find a low A string that increases in tension appropriately?

Sorry for the late reply. OK, are you basing the first six strings on a standard 9-42 set, then adding a low B?

Here's the tension from 0.60" to 0.70". Take your pick.

0.60" = 13.56 pounds
0.62" = 14.41 pounds
0.64" = 15.28 pounds
0.66" = 16.28 pounds
0.68" = 17.24 pounds
0.70" = 18.20 pounds

Assuming you like a set based on 9's, I would go for 9, 12, 16, 24, 32, 44, and either a 66 (min) or a 68 (max).

Unwound 0.22" would be around 27.75 pounds.

This may not be 100% accurate as the info is based on D'Addario, but it should be very close.

No worries, it's not a particularly long post.

Well, we're back to the argument about string manufacturers knowing what they are doing, and with me being only a player and not "a professional" in this field, obviously some people think I don't know what I'm talking about.

So let's keep it simple. If it sounds like sh*t, and if it feels like sh*t... it's sh*t. What can I say? Good luck bro.
