String thickness?

Hey all!
I've been using A-D-A-D-G-H-E tune in my Universe. It's time to clean the guitar and change the strings, but I'm not sure about the thickness. I'd like to use .09 set for the first five strings but the bottom two are a questionmark.. I can't recall the thickness of my current lower A, all I can remember is that it's a bass-string, since I couldn't find a proper one on guitar strings.. Any suggestions on the string selections? The idea is to have thin high strings for easier solo's and thick low ones for power, is this even possible or do I just haveto choose one or the other?

WOW AN H NOTE!

lol. I hope that was a typo.

Anyway, I used to use ernie ball slinky top heavy bottoms for the 6 strings. I'm not sure if there is a 7 string version of that packet. I'm sure there is somewhere. If not, i think someone here knows of a tension calculator so you can figure out what guages you need.

Hope I helped slightly haha.

Yeah I am from Europe and even I don't get it. I skipped that part and simply use the standard the whole world uses...

Re: String thickness?

A German friend explained it to me once, and I was just as confused afterwards!
This is how some people make the musical "joke" of writing classical peaces round the progression B A C H.

Anyway, to the question. This guide will let you work out what gauge to use:

I was kind of kidding, but, actually as I understand it, what we would call Bb is called B and what we would call B is called H!
Algiman is right it allows for all sorts of "funny" jokes in the melody!

Re: String thickness?

I had to pull this from Wiki in relation to the H note. I "discovered" this note after researching Shostakovich years ago:

DSCH is a musical motif used by the Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich to represent himself, in the manner of the BACH motif of Johann Sebastian Bach. It consists of the notes D-E flat-C-B, or D-Es-C-H in German notation, standing for his initials (Д. Ш.) in German spelling (D. Sch.).

to answer OP's question: I use a .056 DR in Bb and it's ok, not too tight or too flabby... 58 might be ideal but DR's doesn't make 'em
60 might be perfect for A though.

Thanks, the chart helped a lot! Now I know exactly what kind of strings I wan't - only problem is that the value of my ideal strings are in UnitWeight (lb/in), and I think most of the strings are measured in thickness, right?

Edit: Sorry, got confused reading the guide.. from my calculations my strings go: 009-012-015-022-030-046-062

Re: String thickness?

B is H in old-school. Not Bb. That being said, I'm tuning to ADGCFAD (1 step down from standard). I used to use an .068 on the bottom and an .052 for the D - nowadays I'm using an .064 for the A and an .048 for the D.
