Swapped LoTRSII for an OFR (with pics)

I got my Original Floyd today and replaced the LoTRSII. It is a direct swap. Even the stud inserts are the same size. I installed the Floyd inserts and they have a lot less slop than the LoTRS pieces.

Re: Swapped LoTRSII for an OFR (with pics)

I set the saddles close to the positions on the LoTRS so it would be close for intonation:

Then I swapped the strings over to the OFR:

Installed:

The gap between the OFR and the recess is a little wider on the left side but I can live with it.

The finished product:

The guitar stays perfectly in tune now and sounds and sustains much, much better.
This is an easy job and anyone with a LoTRSII should do it.

Re: Swapped LoTRSII for an OFR (with pics)

Two things to note:

1. The string retainer bar that came with the Floyd is wider than the Ibanez part. I put it on but it was too wide and the ends stuck out past the sides of the headstock. You can see it in the last pic.

2. The spring block is longer than the LoTRS block. When I put the back cover on the block and springs would hit it on pull ups. This is probably only an issue on the 'S' models since the body is very thin. I'll get out the Dremel tomorrow and cut a clearance hole in the cover tomorrow. I could just leave the cover off but I'm wierd that way.

I swapped nuts too since the original is a very worn cosmo finish but the OFR nut is too tall. I'll grind about 3/32" off of the bottom of it and swap it later.

I did take a little Comet to the pickup rings when I swapped pickups and got the ratty Cosmo finish off. The came out a nice, shiny chrome.

The whole job only took about 45 minutes. Even if you've never done this before, I can't see it taking more than an hour and a half.

Wonder if this would work on all Cosmo hardware. The LoPro in my S540 would look better with the semi-clear black layer removed, since it's worn off a lot already.

You used the powder Comet? Soaked the parts in it, or?

Since I'm dyeing the fretboard on that particular guitar over the weekend, I could give this a shot too.

Flutter is great. Harmonics are better too.

I used a damp rag and Comet to scrub off the remains of the Cosmo finish on the pickup rings. A buffing wheel on a Dremel would be faster but I thought of it after I finished the rings. Doh!

Cool, I'll give it a shot, using the most worn saddle as a demo, since it's mostly chrome already. Thanks for the tip.

Since i've never seen a stud out of the guitar live... how do you insert the new ones? They're knurled or something? You hammer then in? Thump thump that's it?

Yep, just hammer them in. Use a block of wood or something between the hammer and the insert so you don't screw it up. The insert is brass and brass is fairly soft. I used an old screwdriver. I put the handle end on the insert and hammered it right in. The Floyd inserts are knurled and a tight fit, which is good.
