Question

Swirl Ideas On RG 320FM AM

Hi everyone. I'm buying a Body of a RG 320 FM AM in excelent condition and want to make some nice look paint on it.

This RG looks like this
http://www.music-town.de/shop/images...320dxfm_am.jpg

I have the full set of Black Hardware to install on this body and i'm thinking to do a light black paint only swirl over this amber naked wood finish. I want some ideas before i destroy the guitar or anything.

It would work??? (i never saw a swirl with a "naked wood finish" under it)

Re: Swirl Ideas On RG 320FM AM

I was wandering here about how it would end, i think it would end like a tiger hauahua i don't know about this, maybe i should do a heavy black swirl to be more like the contrast i want from "classic instrument paint finish" on the 320FM to the "modern killer abstract" from the Swirl guitars...

Re: Swirl Ideas On RG 320FM AM

Ive done a few swirls, and the swirling has a mind of its own in a sense. To keep the wood natural, and have swirl patterns would be unlikely to achieve. The paint would film over the wood in some way. I thought about this and thought maybe taping a pattern over the wood would work, but again the amount of detail involved would be unpractical. You need to use a primer before swirling and to try and keep wood natural just aint going to happen. For an easier approach, try doing the body in a black primer and them do a swirl with a color you like.

I don't get it.. how it would not work???

If i sand a little the already cured clear of the body (just to the paint gloe on)
and than swirl a mix of black paint and clear paint... if i use a lot of clear paint and don't mix too much with the black, i think this could work. i'm going to do some tests with a piece of wood....

If you don't prime it, the colour would brown and wouldn't stay true to its actual colour. Also, I'm not certain but I think if you don't prime the body, the water would cause the wood to rot. I could be wrong on that but I'm pretty sure that's is the reason why you need to prime and seal the body. The paint also needs the primer to stick otherwise it would run (not ATD style run, but horrible run) and be incredibly messy.

if i do this i should do some things first...

Sand the actual finish until it get little a roughtness, so the swirled paint would not run and will glue easy. (maybe more easy than primer)

i Should seal all the holes with wax, and maybe melt candle wax on the holes (everyone)

Left the guitar a minimum time underwater to prevent this water to get in someway....

-- i think the hardest part is to make a good pattern with black color and clear color, i think they have a tendency to mix very quickly, so i'll have to be very careful with the paint kind choices and even a better way to drop the paint on water surface making it to not mix fast. Easiest paint for me to find is Poliurethane paint, but there are oils and enamels to try... so
