Question

Swirling a pickguard.. is it possible???

hi... i want to swirl a black pickguard from a Ibanez RG with black+white+red colors...

i know that oil paints will not stick to plastic, i'm wondering about those plastic paints on spray cans (spray some on a little can and then drop on water) or to prime the pickguard and use some puliurethane paint... but i reallt don't know how these 2 paints will float or work nice on "boraxed" water???

any ideia???

anybody already did that???

when I tried spray paint it dried straight away and skinned on the water. Prime the pickguard maybe?

Re: Swirling a pickguard.. is it possible???

ok, spray directly on the water i think will not work... i'm thinking of spray a lot on a little cup so i can get some of the paint in liquid form...

yes... i can prime and use a good paint... i think most of swirls are done with oil paints... if i prime it i have to go for puliuretane or enamel paints, don't know about oil paints and prime

i think i'll go for prime and enamel because i think puliuretane will no spread on water and it's a expensive paint...

oil paints and primer work... thats what I've used before. Don't know if the spray can idea would work. Worth a shot... you can get some really nice fluorescents in spray cans.

i'm a little step to try a special plastic paint i think i'ts based on enamel and acrilic and don't need prime... but it's very expensive... i think it will not work on water but would the best shot to do a pickguard if not swirled...
maybe i'll buy one can to try it.. if it not work i'll have to prime and go for enamel or oil...

i'll post some result pics later... thanks!!!

Just scuff the pick guard w/ some 600 grit so that there is a surface for the paint to stick to.

here it goes...

i didn't sand the pickguard but i bought some vinilic paint used on silk-screen painting... its perfect and glue right on plastic... perfect for pickguard and very easy to do...

i use borax swirl and then i had the ideia to make little drops of white color over it, like sprayed... it already need to be finished with 3 layers of vinilic clear paint...

here without the masking and the 45° scratched out... the custom paiting will be just on the top of the pickguard... i could have used some 3ply with white... but now it's late...

That's it...

Re: Swirling a pickguard.. is it possible???

Hello all, I'm a newbie and here goes my first post. Let's see if I can not sound like a fool *grin*

As far as using spray cans to swirl? You could try holding the can upside down, pushing the nozzle and letting all the gass out, than poke a small hole in the can near the top and just pour the paint out. It might work.

2TS, that came out cool!! I hope the paint won't be worn off from picking. I'm gonna have to give that a try some time soon.

Regards, Ken

Nice swirl.
Did you spray the white or individually drop blobs of white onto the pick guard?

It's finished and mounted together...

It's custom RG 350. I got it in all separated parts (including neck and body) from e-baay and some stores and everything came to my house very slowly (i live in brazil)... took maybe half a year to swirl the pickguard and finish everything and do the electronics and setup... but i'm very amazed with the result... the sound is incredible and the visual is nice...

Body from a 350DX
Neck from a 350 SP1
pickguard custom made (without middle pickup hole) by Redzline and swirled by myself with vinilic paint
Dimarzio Fred + Air Norton
Gotoh Floyd Bridge (customized by myself to fit the EDGE III cavity)
Nice mother of pearl top knobs
Super switch doing 5 sounds from the two humbuckers...

Thanks to the ones that helped!!!

Just to add... Swirling pickguards is no problem. My Herc Fede swirl is swirled with the pickguard attached to the body. Just don't ask me how.
