Re: Swirling Is An Art (Tutorial)

As far as tips go, will summed it up preety much. It doesn't matter what brand you use and the proof is we all use different brands. you have to practice and find out how the paint you are using behaves.
You all saw the tests I did for the PMC I restored, I did not just dipped it. The day I dipped the body I made about 10 different bowls. they were all similar and different at the same time, some might have comeout even better then the one I finally decided to use, I'll never know, but I did not dip the until I was realy happy with what I see on the water.
You have to get to a point where your paint looks like a swirl on the water before you dip the guitar. keep pieces of scrap wood and use them for tests. It can be very disscuraging when you have to remove the paint from a guitar body.

1st blue plasticote enamel straight from the pot on white base

2nd Red & black plasticote enamel straight from the pot, white base

3rd Wanted to do some neon's but couldn't find neon enamel paints so neon green spray can base coat, black plasticote ontop

4th Black and clear plasticote enamel ontop of the gold leaf

5th Found some fluro enamel paints on **** - Oneshot signwriters enamel, so though I'd give them a try. This was the first time I used borax in the tub & played around with the paints with reducer to make them spread on the water - not too thick, not too thin & as Will said the order you add the colours makes a difference to the amount you have to reduce each

6th redid my green one above, Oneshot signwriters enamel on white base coat
That gold leaf with black and clear guitar looks real nice, got any more pictures of it?

HI, that GMC is my favorite one ! Oh my god I dream about it when i saw it the first time on youtube man. very very good job.

I'm just I little frenchy who would like to make test on his 7420 BP that i just bought. And I know that you Have to keep your art secret but can you just tell me if i want to start my project in my garage if you add something to the water or not (in the trash) ?

and if you think i should use acrylic or oil (glycero) paint for my preview tests, thanks for your answers that will encourage me.

manta

PS : we don't have such good frenchy job in france :-( !

Re: Swirling Is An Art (Tutorial)

Though these are not guitars, here are my swirls:

1. I make custom arcade sticks. www.yahsticks.com This is a swirled arcade stick:

2. Heres an experimentation I did, and it turned into my mom's mousepad! It actually works decently as a mousepad:

I like the second one a lot more. The 1st one I didn't swirl the paints around enough.
My method is, oil based paint, pour on top of water, swirl swirl swril till its thinned down, then dip. Thats all. After a week or so of drying, I wet sand it, then I use this stuff called scratch out. It makes it high gloss and is a rub on clear coat. Works beautifully.

I'm hoping to swirl a guitar body one day.

It's an acrilic based paint, also made in Brazil. Have no idea of brands for international market (and i don't care about you finding it at MalWart store close your house or not). LOL

I'm pretty sure, back in the day, Darren used those acrilic based paints to swirl shirts and i started from this info to get my own results.
Check some of threads i started to discover some swirls i've posted on all those years of swirling fun. Hope you like 'em!
Long live swirling fun!!!
Cheers,
Will Tubarão.

what are your paints called? the brand name i mean. im trying as many as possible and id like to research this.

Re: Swirling Is An Art (Tutorial)

I did this as one of my first swirls. Its still in use at my Moms house!

I like this strat i did 2 years ago.

Similair colors on an RG 570

Every year i do 10 bodies or so, and they get better. It takes a long time to perfect, and even now some just dont have the Magic.

Re: Swirling Is An Art (Tutorial)

The latest. This guitar is so hard to take pictures of. The colors are not nearly as vibrant as real life. This is the best pic out of 30. Let me know what you think!
