Re: Swirling Is An Art (Tutorial)

As far as I was aware, I think the pros use HOK (House Of Kolor) paint. Just a rumour.

Drop the dominant colour in the water first and let it spread, then add your other colours. You will need to pre thin them first. I am unsure of any measurements so trial and error I’m afraid.

As for method of swirling, when you put the paint on the water try to keep it in straight lines. Don’t swirl it around at all and then as you push the guitar through swirl it (make an S shape movement) as you like. This gives you the lines of swirl rather than a ciaos swirl.

One easy way to clear the paint from the top after you have pushed your guitar through is to drop some washing up fluid in the centre of the water. Wait a second then lift your guitar back up.

I wouldn’t bother with Borax, it doesn’t seem to do much and it adds blemishes like little white dots if it hasn’t mixed in well.

Well done Thirstygums !

What brand of paint are you using ? It doesn’t look like HOK.

(Edited disgraceful spelling mistake )

no im in the uk, thats humbrols the black and green and pink and purple all work really well straight out of the tin, the black is thinned 70/30 and the green 80/20- i handled it wrong in diping just so back to the drawing board!

Humbrols are difficult to swirl, you have done well if that is what you are using !

The lighter colours are heavier than the darker ones. You will probably notice that the white sinks !

If you try the HOK paints (they have much more pigment) you should get better results. You can get them in the UK.

Obviously try to balance them first in separate pots before going for it. I mean make sure they both float well on their own before introducing them together.

If you are sticking with black and green then pour the black in first, then stripe (in lines) the base black with your green. If you want a tight swirl then pour the green down a coat hanger wire into the water. Don’t swirl the paint, do that with your guitar as you dip, if you swirl the paint then you will either end up with a grey sludge or a ciaos swirl…neither is a good look !

Remember to pour some washing up liquid in before you pull the guitar back out, this will make the paint fly to the edges of the tank.

Good luck and let me know how you get on.

Re: Swirling Is An Art (Tutorial)

Yes I’m afraid so, new water every time. This shouldn’t be a problem for you unless you are going into production. Practice in a small bucket first with a piece of wood. Don’t forget the washing liquid is really for if you are swirling on your own, if you have someone helping you they could brush the paint away for you.

Something else I forgot to mention when you fill your tank if possible leave it over night to reach ambient temperature. This will also allow the chlorine in the water to evaporate.

Make certain the top of your tank is covered otherwise you will get thousands of bugs in there !!

im going to try to thicken the water with wallpaper paste and use some of these fabric type paints next- ill report back

Great tutorial! I would like to add that it's all about timing and type of color. I have never even considered using something other than enamel paints made for car finishing. I takes 100 times of testing how much thinner/hardener or other compounds you need to add to get it done. And believe me - you have to stick with your measurements, you cant mix right proportions twice without that.

Thirstygums

What sort of effect are you trying to achieve ?

I assumed a Herc or OOTSwirled type swirl, or are you aiming for something different ?

Re: Swirling Is An Art (Tutorial)

Oh I see (thank you MarkE for the link).

Thirstygums.

The reason I asked about what effect you wanted was because you were talking about using wallpaper paste and I thought you were going to try something else.

If you want the effect of that guitar in the link then you need to do what I mentioned earlier.

I am going to quote and repeat myself here a bit but to achieve that look you need to….

Use HOK paints (they have much more pigment) I am almost certain it is what Herc and OOTSwirled use and to me personally they are by far the best swirlers. You can get HOK in the UK.

Try to balance the paint first in separate pots before going for it. Make sure they float well on their own before introducing them together.

Although the guitar you linked to looks chaotic it isn’t actually. You need to make straight lines with your paint on the water before dipping. Don’t swirl the paint around before you dip as it will be too much.

That particular guitar you linked has a wavy line (but it is a straight line dip). To achieve this just kick the side of your tank to make the water ripple before dipping. Perhaps get someone to do this for you as you dip. Then as you push your guitar down do so in a zig zag fashion and don’t whatever you do let it come up at all as you are dipping.

Clear the paint before removing your guitar.

You do not need wallpaper paste, borax or any secret mumbo jumbo. It is HOK paints thinned down enough so they float, that’s all. Just make sure you prep you white coat well enough before dipping.
