That new Craftsman compu-carve....

What do you guys think of that new Compu-carve? Looks like it would be usefull for inlays, or complete fretboards...Has anyone used one of these yet?
i just thought it looked pretty cool.

It's not completely new. It's been around for alittle over a year now. I've thought of getting one, but I can't keep it busy. If I could though $2k is kinda cheap for a portable CNC machine, and that's basically what it is. You could probably have it route out the internals of a guitar body leaving you with cutting the outside shape.

What I don't know is how the modeling software is. CAN you design your own inlays in 3D and transfer that to the machine? From the commercial it's nothing but preloaded artwork that's being used.

The bad thing is that you can't exactly go somewhere and check it out or tool around with the software. Ask someone in Sears about it and they'll read to you the description on the side of the box. Maybe there's a user forum somewhere.

Perhaps after next years tax return.

When I first saw the commercial I thought about making board inlays too, lol, but then I read the reviews on Sears:

http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...ools&adCell=A3

Yes you can make your own stuff but yikes!! The machine is a POS and its breaking on a lot of people, and breaking bad. Everything from internal electronics failures to drive shaft failures. Looks like they didn't think this one all the way through, I think craftsman needs to stick to screwdrivers and hammers

Over priced and full of bugs....

If you are really looking into something like that, then look at some of the home shop CNC routers.

Re: That new Craftsman compu-carve....

yeah...I'm not really looking to get anything like that, I just thought it looked fairly cool because of how compact it is. I find it understandable that there are bugs with the program too. If my grandfather were still alive, I know he would have snagged one of these up to try it out. This is the first gen of this type of portable CNC...I'm sure they'll fix the bugs and be back with a gen II that does better....

Well it isnt Sears falt (it is that they sell it) Carveright's falt. The compu-carve is just a Carveright one repackaged. Here's their site http://www.carveright.com/ I looked at them some time ago but until the bugs are fixed =p Go read their forum, some people have used them for guitar making.

I had a student whom retired as a wood worker show me this almost a year ago.

When the bugs are worked out and the next generation hits, it could pay for itself in a short amount of time

I thought I saw it was able to turn out completed bodies? Of course the amount of time is fairly long, like 2hrs or more from what little I read IIRC.

Two hours is still a heck of a lot better than waiting 5-7 days for the postal service to bring one to your door. Not to mention the amount of money it costs just to buy a body, or neck. The more I watch things, the more rediculous the prices seem. If people are buying them though....supply and demand...what can a guy say?
