Tips for Peavey XXX Hiss ??

I just got one of the Peavey Triple XXX Super 40EFX's on blow-out from MF. Seems pretty good, but I'm still checking it out. My current amp is a Vox AD50VT, which sounds pretty darn good except that it is too dark (muddy actually) on all settings except clean.

Anyway, the XXX has quite a hiss at idle. The hiss I'm talking about is not affected by which channel I'm using or the gain or volume settings. (Cranking up the volume on the Ultra channel actually introduces a separate hiss, but I'll never have the volume cranked up that much so it won't matter.) I picked up a MXR SmartGate and it definitely helps w/o affecting tone (at least to my ears). I put it on either the HISS or MID setting with the trigger knob turned all the way down and it is very transparent.

Do you guys think I've taken the best approach to reduce the hiss or would you have done something different? (Let me go ahead and give the first answer that I know is coming: "Yeah, I would have bought a better amp")

Thanks in advance for the advice.

That sounds like it's working great for you. I have a 5150 and that thing hisses too.

just would like to say I am fond of the MXR smartgate too and think it's great. Sounds like it should work fine for you.

Regarding the MXR Smartgate, is the battery being drained when the stomp switch is off if I leave the plugs in both the input and output?
