Trem Problems Once Again

Hi people! Since the last time I posted on my previous thread, I have experience a new problem with the Edge III: when I pull up on the arm, the strings are perfectly tuned, but when I dive down, they go out of tune a little bit. What could be the problem with the dang trem? Is it the springs? The old strings? The knife edges? The saddles? The nut? The whole bridge?

My springs are lined up parallel to each other, and not in the famous "arrow" config. The strings are a few months old, but they're still ok, though I think the mass of the first two treble strings was reduced due to corrosion. I checked the knife edges, and they're fine. The saddles seem unstable to me, because the metal things underneath each saddle which counteract the movement of the fine tuners are a bit loose. The locking nut still works fine. So what could be the problem? Should I change springs/strings or something? Please help!

Take the guitar to your local guitar tech. Stay with him whilst he does the set up. This will acheive two things:

1. Your guitar will (should) sound as good as it is supposed to, with the problem resolved it will allow you to get on with playing the guitar; and

2. You will learn how to fix it properly (hopefully) for next time.

Good luck.

Ive yet to find a luthier willing to let you stay. Most around here take the guitar for a few days and return it in a week.

I understand the concept of people wanting to protect their livelihoods, but seriously, it seems to me that some of these guys are just being jerks about it. If they want your business badly enough (and most "luthiers" or guitar techs worth their salt DO want your business), they'll let you stay. If not, then they are, not to put too fine a point on it, being total buttholes. If you're lucky enough to live in an area that can and does support or necessitate several "luthiers", you'll eventually find one that will actually ENCOURAGE you to hang around and watch them work on your guitar. Kick 'em to the curb...there's better things to do than put up with that crap.

don't forget that many people (not only luthiers/techs) can't stand working with someone's breath on their neck. i'm one of them, but some customers can't leave their guitars to my place for work, so as an exception i'll let them stay there while i work. it's a bit frustrating when someone kind of "examines" what you're doing, for hours, checking your moves step by step, like he doesn't trust you...

this is why i havent had my S470 set up yet. I want to watch someone do it and potentially learn something. It's not about not trusting. It's that Ive never adjusted/touched a floyd setup. And yeah the ZR is alot easier, and I know the basic steps and have instructions, but I'm still uncomfortable with that.

lol...
True, dat.
Still, I'm not talking about particularly sensitive work here. While a fret dressing, inlay work, or other such jobs may require unbroken and total concentration, routine floating trem adjustments and retstringing isn't exactly in the same league.

yea, that's true. actually i tend to teach my customers/friends how to deal with Floyds and string-changes, or at least the rules of thumb to not getting crazy with those. but often it's hard when the most of them can't even change the strings on a Tele...
