Tung Oil - What is it?

What is it?
What does it do?
Is it OK for a maple board?
Where can I get it?

Tung Oil

I can't answer all your questions, but I can tell you I got mine at the local hardware store. *Swedish Tung Oil, or Swiss, or Finnish, or something.
Im curious to find out some more details on what it is because I'd like to know how to color it.
It's great on all woods as far as I know. *It's silky smooth. *It absorbs into the wood, rather than coating it and sealing it like a lacquer.

Tung Oil

Courtesy of dictionary.com:

tung n : Chinese tree bearing seeds that yield tung oil

Then i went to google.com and asked "What is tung oil?" and this site was one of the search results.

Tung oil is a natural penetrating wood finish. It gives a natural, satiny-smooth feeling to the wood and doesn't leave a gummy build-up like other oil products. It should be fine on a maple neck and fretboard, though you shouldn't apply it to rosewood, since it's already an "oily" wood.

It can be applied on stained or un-stained woods, but i don't think it can (or should) be tinted itself, since it absorbs deep into the wood and does leech out a bit over time (thanks to osmosis). The first application should involve a few coats to get good penetration. After that, you can simply apply "maintenance" coats every few months or years as required. I have a guitar with a walnut body and maple neck which are both tung-oiled, and they feel amazing.

You can pick it up at any good hardware store that carries a range of wood finishing products.

You can also get it online at Stewart MacDonald's Guitar Shop Supply.
