tung n : Chinese tree bearing seeds that yield tung oil
Then i went to google.com and asked "What is tung oil?" and
this site was one of the search results.
Tung oil is a natural penetrating wood finish. It gives a natural, satiny-smooth feeling to the wood and doesn't leave a gummy build-up like other oil products. It should be fine on a
maple neck and fretboard, though you shouldn't apply it to rosewood, since it's already an "oily" wood.
It can be applied on stained or un-stained woods, but i don't think it can (or should) be tinted itself, since it absorbs deep into the wood and does leech out a bit over time (thanks to osmosis). The first application should involve a few coats to get good penetration. After that, you can simply apply "maintenance" coats every few months or years as required. I have a guitar with a walnut body and maple neck which are both tung-oiled, and they feel amazing.
You can pick it up at any good hardware store that carries a range of wood finishing products.
You can also get it online at
Stewart MacDonald's Guitar Shop Supply.
