Tuning stability problems

I have recently purchased a JEM7D off ****. It is a stunning guitar and is fitted with a Lo-Pro Edge II tem. Previously I had a JS100 with a Lo-Pro Edge tem and the tuning after some divebombs was terrible. There is a significant improvement with the JEM7D but not quite perfect. i want it to be more stable during whammy bar movement and was wondering if Hipshots Tremsetter would help?

I have made steps to eliminate other reason for tuning instability problems e.g.

Correct floating angle of trem
String stretching

Any ideas?

Re: Tuning stability problems

do you mean edge pro? if so, it probably doesn't have locking studs. many words have been written about this. also, the knife edges might need shaping, as well as the receiving angle on the studs. you might want to consider the tension of the springs, too. you have the bridge floating parallel to the body?

Re: Tuning stability problems

Yeah it's the Edge Pro II off a 2004 JEM7D...

What's this locking stud thing then? The knife edge doesn't need shaping at all. I've had a look at it and it's as if it's new (mint condition). Maybe the springs need to be broken into then? The bridge is parallel to the body and set up correctly....

Re: Tuning stability problems

that should be an edge pro. the edge pro II is found on korean models.

all (most?) edge pro equipped guitars were shipped with non-locking studs. it means that the stud that the bridge pivots against is not as secure/stable as the older locking variety. they used a small inserted set screw lock the stud into the insert. non-locking studs can contribute to tuning instability and ovalling of the insert cavity, especially in basswood.

fortunately, there is a cure. you can replace them with locking studs. you might want to read up on this over at ibanezrules.com or do a search on it here.

not saying this is conclusively the problem. there's plenty of people out there using the edge pro with non locking studs. could be that the spring tension needs to settle in with some good use.

Re: Tuning stability problems

The JS100 doesn't ususally have a Lo-Pro Edge trem on it either unless someone fitted one themselves and that may be why it didn't work properly.
The Lo-Pro Edge 7 on one of my guitars is the best trem i've ever used.

Sounds like you're getting your trems mixed up. As Damo says the DBK should have an Edge-pro not an EP II.

Re: Tuning stability problems

Start with simple things, make sure the screws that hold the nut on the neck are nice and snug, well, tight, but don't get carried away and crack the neck. Also make sure the screws that hold the neck on are tight. As wood ages, it can dry out and shrink slightly so the screws get loose. If the neck (or nut) shifts even slightly, it will come back out of tune. The Edge Pro shouldn't be giving you too many headaches, even without the locking studs (for more info on the studs check out www.ibanezrules.com).

Re: Tuning stability problems

It does sound like I am getting my trems mixed up! The confusion is the one that was on my 2004 JS100 looks exactly the same as is on my JEM7D but on the JEM, the saddles are slightly different. To clear it up (hopefully), please have a look at my picture of the trem and can someone identify what it is?

cheers for your help....
