Fantastic work man...
I'd love to have the skills and tools you have to pull that off.
Did you cut two 6 string tremelos to make the 8 string?
More pics!

Wow! that green 6 is amazing! Beautiful quilt, and blank maple board is gorgeous. Great work. Now if only Ibanez could built stuff like that.

Re: Two new builds a 6 & an 8
Sorry to dig up this old thread. My first try with re-topping an RG was a success and I want to do it again in the near future. Two questions for you, andyt:
1) You glued the top on first, minus the arm contour. So I imagine you scraped the squeezed out glue away with something long and thin that was in the 'crack' formed by the unbent top and arm contour. Is that correct?
2) When you did add glue to the arm contour, how did you get it under the bent part? Did you have to pry it up and use a thin paint brush, for example?
3) I love the look of the faux binding created with a dyed maple top but leaving the sides of the maple natural. Did you spray that, or wipe on the dye/stain. If you wiped, which is what I'm hoping, how did you prevent the stain from running down the side. Careful work? Pre-sealing the sides only?
Thanks, and lovely work!

Hi Andrew
1) yes glued on the top & cleared out any excess with the bit of cut sponge on a stick. Then dried overnight
2)Once the arm contour was bent all the way, take the clamps off & it springs up a bit, enough to pour some glue in & spread around with a lolly stick.
3)Before staining I masked up the top & the sides with blue tape, then brushed on tru oil about 2 coats to seal the faux binding. Had a couple of dribbles and bleeds under the tape, so scraped these off before staining or it wouldn't take. To be honest with the spirit stains I used you could wipe them on the top with no risk of any running down the sides, but sealing was just to make sure.
Good luck, have fun & post some pics when done
Andy
