Not cheating, every Ibanez NEEDS a neck shim and I've seen many (mostly imports) that don't have even the paper shim. If the action isn't low enough and the posts are bottomed out, neck shim is the *only* answer.

p.s. make sure the post set screws are backed out and that's not what's stopping lowering them.

Rich is right. I cannot understand why Ibanez buries the bridge so low in the body by having the wrong neck angle to allow proper use and adjustment. It's like every other Ibanez i come across going back to '87. You think they'd learn by now... glen

PS - also check the nut height. Odds are it's too high as well.

Ouch..... how many time's on average have you had to take a neck off and install one with all the new guitars you have sold?

Rarely on US guitars. Almost 100% of what I import though.

every Ibanez I own has a shim... don't waste your time wondering if you should do it... just get it done.

Guys... what I understood from the original question is why the height adjustment screws won't turn anymore.. first thing that came to my mind is that the set screw is locked down... and needs to be loosened so that the height adjustment screw can move.

I may be totally off base but when he said that the bridge sits perfectly.. I think that he meant that the bridge is level.

thanx yall for your imput, im gonna investigate in a neck shim. the bridge sits in the body perfectly (according to the specs i got from jemsite) i also have a 2027 & a s 7 and *i have set them up like you read about in guitar set up magazine. *I have no way to mesure the action but when i compare the uv to my other axes its clear that *the action is too high. thanx again 4 your help.

i find that neck shims change the tone of the guitar a bit, of course im a tone fanatic, but i can tell a slight thinning of the sound. *on my UV777bk, i took out the shim and planed the inside of the trem cavity down so that the trem wouldnt bottom out -- because the trem hit the cavity before the screws bottomed out. *worked great for me. *the other problem with neck shims is that it changes the angle of the strings to the pickups, especially the bridge pickup -- and i also notice a significant tone variation that this causes. *so all around, i found it better to just plane the cavity.

if you are going to plane, i would do the body neck joint instead of the tremolo cavity, for asthetic reasons and functionality. So instead of shimming the body side of the neck pocket, you could plane/angle the headstock side of the neck pocket for the same effect. Either way a non-reversible process not a beginner... glen

Hummmm... wouldn't it be simpler just to plane the base heal of the neck? That way if something went wrong you could always fall back on shim's to bail you out...

I know you would hardly take that much off to begin with so it shouldn't endanger the mounting screws from comming up to deep...

That way the neck heal would have full contact with the body as well.....( which should keep the tone the way it was ment to be )

Give me feedback on the pro's and con's of this thought.....

if you plane the neck socket you still get the uneveness of the strings and pickups. *the trem cavity planing is not visible, its under the trem -- i was talkin about the part directly under the trem, not the part that has the spongy stuff over it.
