Veneer under the paint of my 99 7421

Man.. I don't know what to really say about this one?

I have a project 7421 (7621 neck..yay?).

I spent yesterday removing the paint as I am taking it back for a natural finish.

To my surprise, beneath the paint was a beautiful heavy grained (similar to swamp Ash) one piece veneer, its on the front and back, I was so happy to find this until I stuffed up one of the horns, pressing too hard, exposing what would have to be the basswood as it is tan/reddish in colour.....thus discovering that it was a veneer

Anyway, what is up with that? I would love some feedback.

and finally what would you reccomend, Oil the body or stain & laquer.
or even recomend where you guys get some great looking veneers from as I have no experience with these

Many thanks

Re: Veneer under the paint of my 99 7421

I have stripped the paint of an 1990 RG550 and a 1998 RG7620 and they both had similar veneers. These were put on top of basswood in order to have a smoother finish that won't have cracks at the wood joints. I also believe that the veneer material absorbs less primer and paint than basswood, so it probably turns out more economical for Ibanez to paint.

hey, great,

that makes total sense, it looked so good though, I thought I was lucky before I found out it was a veneer (thin one at that).

Thanks for that.

See here how mine looks naked, I still haven't decided what to do with it yet, but you can clearly see how the wood looks. It is a three piece body. How many pieces is yours?

Nice, I am pretty sure it will be a 3 piece as I have seen others that have been taken back to natural and they were 3 also.

I am still yet to get through the veneer, mainly because of the joys of having a 6yo and trying to bring him up with power tools

I wanted to go for the Honey stain look but that will depend on what it looks like once its cleaned.

I have considered taking the path of a veneer but I cant seem to find any decent sources, but i have to dig deeper on that note.

Yours came up pretty clean, I'm crossing my fingers in that regard.

Re: Veneer under the paint of my 99 7421

Well, I didn't sand through the veneer, since I don't like how it would look with a see through finish (3-piece, veneer on the flat surface etc...), so it will be some solid finish. I left the venner so I can have a smother final finish.
Oh, no power tools were used, just a sanding block with 180 grit and at the end 320 grit dry sandpapers...
