Video -- Beginner's Guide to the Edge Pro?

Hey everybody.

I'm pretty new to locking tremolo systems, and I was wondering if there was anyone out there willing to do a complete video guide to setting up your guitar for play (string stretching, tuning, height, intonation, whatever), and then putting it up on YouTube.

I'm sure there must be hundreds of newbies to the Floyd Rose/Ibanez Edge/TRS/etc who struggle with the steep learning curve. While the guides in the tech section help a bit, it's pretty easy to get confused or nervous about just how much you need to tighten this or that. There's nothing quite like watching someone actually doing it in front of you to follow. It's exactly the sort of video (or series of videos) that would help thousands of guitarists.

Anyone willing to do this pleeeeease?

Have you considered taking it to your local guitar tech and ask him to show you?

You don't need a video - if you can't follow Bamm's suggestion go to www.ibanezrules.com tech section

Re: Video -- Beginner's Guide to the Edge Pro?

Well quite apart from having to pay for it, while it would obviously help me, it wouldn't help anyone else who would be in my position (coming from fixed bridges to complicated trems). I know you were trying to help, but it's a bit like asking for free guitar lessons on the net, and then being told to go to a teacher, y'know?

It must be such a common stumbling block that a video showing you all the tricks of the trade would just be so very useful.

Reading through it as we speak, and while it's helping quite a lot, it's slow going and was actually what prompted me to ask for a video.

I'm in the process of making a website for myself (actually, the girlfriend is doing it) and I'm going to have a section for this on the site with a video. When I do it, I will absolutely post it here.

And, to those who are giving the guy crap, lay off. The question is perfectly fine. When I started working on my guitars, I was a little scared, too, so I can relate. Just because some of you picked it up easily or had someone to show you how to do it doesn't mean everyone else did. So, leave the guy alone. It's a perfectly reasonable request.

Oh yeah, and, I'm sure most techs are just jumping at the chance to show potential customers how to work on their guitars so they don't need the tech's services anymore.

I look forward to it. Maybe you could do a series of vids to accompany each chapter in the tech section at ibanezrules.com.

Cheers. A related video actually helped the most -- it's exactly the same guitar I have: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=P1c-7-VMY_w

One thing I was surprised by was what he said about tuning. Do I have to block the bridge every single time the guitar goes out of tune?

No, you only have to block the bridge on string changes, and neck work etc.

Why does he stick the spoon in then? I see why he puts the battery in early on when switching out the strings -- easier to remove the strings, but then when he's tuning up, he sticks the spoon in the bridge's neutral/zero position. He says something along the lines of 'you won't be able to change the tuning easily (to Drop D or whatever), and you'll need to repeat all the steps again'.

Or is it the case that you only need to block the bridge if you're doing a major change in tuning, but it's not required for a guitar that's only slightly out of tune?

serotonin:
I have found out from my local guitar shop guitar tech, that its only needed to block the tremolo, when there is a great reduction in tension from the strings, like there is less tension pulling the bridge from the strings... wait i reapeted myself... DOH
i found that one out today after my lesson.
So you dont have to, but its just like a precaution to keep the other strings from breaking. i would advise doing it if you are changing out low e or a. if you are changin more than 1 string, do each one induvidually. if ur changing strings at all i suggest putting a thing in there, if your nervous and only have 1 set of strings, just to make sure.
make sure u get a towl or somthing in there so you wont scratch anything.
no its not required for a guitar thats slightly outa tune.

Re: Video -- Beginner's Guide to the Edge Pro?

He puts the spoon in there so that the bridge acts a fixed bridge so its easier to tune up. Without the spoon it just takes longer beacuse you have to keep tuning it up until every string it settled and in tune. So the spoon it just a much quicker way to tune. It settles it it zero and after you tune it up when you remove the spoon the bridge will either be level or pulled back so you set the springs accordingly, if its pulled forward even with the spoon there then you know you have to tighten the springs.
Anyway the only reason he blocked the trem was because he was doing a string change.

i think the only thing they didn't cover was string stretching after its tuned up give each string a stretch by pulling it off the fretboard about 15-20cm be gentle on the thin E string and then re-tune and leave the locking nut off for about a day or 2 but keep playing it and always retune after you play for those first day or 2. And thats basically it once you do about 3 string changes you'll be fine and know what to do inside out.
