Water marks and spots during wet sanding

Hi guys. Today I wetsanded one of my projects for the final finish. I sanded the poly clear enough for the whole body to have no shiny spots. I was happy with the job although there were dried water spots and residue that wet sanding could not get rid of. Will polishing get rid of these ugly water marks? I waited 24 hours after spraying the clear to wet sand. Any help at all would be appreciated!! BTW the water marks are on only certain parts of the body.

Depending on what clear coat you sprayed, you have to wait X amount of time for it to throughly dry. 24 hours really doesn't sound like it was long enough. Are the spots still there today? Maybe, if they dry right and it looks ok later you'll be alright, but I don't have much experience in refinishing guitars.

Yeah, you might not have waited long enough before sanding. I sprayed about 5-6 coats of clear and waited a week, then sprayed again, then waited a week, then sprayed again... then waited two weeks... and after I finished all my sanding and polishing and it looked beautiful... the clear still ended up with marks where it rested on the covered stand. The clear still wasn't hard.

So next time I'm just gonna have to give it a full 6 weeks or so to be sure.

You can always try to use a swirl/haze remover to see if that helps free up the surface enough to polish it out. But I dunno.

Re: Water marks and spots during wet sanding

I've heard that numerous times but in the past I have not had a problem and poly's are said to be ok to wet sand after 24 hours. I clear coated over the marks one final time and will try again tomorrow. If i did not wait long enough for the paint to dry, wouldn't there be water residue on every part of the body? I am going to dry the water more frequently to keep it from sticking in the paint.

Have a pic of the "water marks?" What grit sand paper are you wet sanding with? It may be a bit overkill, but I spray and sand in the following manner:
3 coats / dry overnight
3 coats / dry overnight
lightly dry sand with 400
3 coats / dry overnight
lightly dry sand with 600
3 coats / dry overnight
wet sand with 800
3 coats / dry overnight
wet sand with 1000
3 coats / dry overnight
wet sand with 1500 - then 2000
Next, Buff (by hand) with Mequires' Fine Cut, #26 Show car glaze, #7 Wax (ScratchX for any light swirls after the Fine Cut)

Gives a Mirror shine - and a DEEP, durable finish. The Poly I'm using is Xtreme ClearCoat from 5star autobody.

I coated over with Poly and wet sanded 48 hours later. Used a handheld buffer and got a factory/mirror like finish with no water spots!
