I'm not sure about this: when I push back on the headstock, notes go sharp. I've checked the bolts at the neck joint - everything's tight. Is this normal?

well if you push back the headstock the neck flexes and the notes should go sharp. i don't know how much tough.

I was just wondering, 'cause I've never seen this before...discovered it by accident!

you can do this on any guitar or bass or pretty much any stringed instrument. And yes it is normal. Even if you had a neck-body it's normal. I'm not sure if it's bad for the neck or not.

This is one reason why you hold the guitar in playing position when tuning or intonating. *Otherwise you're chasing a moving target.

I've noticed that my AANJ joints seem to flex a little more than my standard ones. *Oh, well - life's a compromise...

Haven't you ever seen Jimmy Page (and many others) do subtle dips in pitch by pushing the neck on his Tele forward while pushing back on the upper bout of the body?

A lot of Flamenco players push their necks on their nylon strings forward too, it's kinda like a really tight whammy bar, all necks do it, they are wood, it's the reason a truss rod works, it's all dependent on the tension on the neck, so you push back, it goes sharp, push forward, it goes flat.

this trick works really nicely with Les Pauls, thanks to their angular neck. Saying that, it WAS a friends guitar so I wasn't fussed.

I've got an old-style heel joint on my RG550 and I'm assuming you get more flex with the AANJ because of the difference in the amount of wood... But hey, if you have an Edge, why bother?
