Weird Frequency Buzzing

Hey guys. I have had my JEM guitar for about 3 years. Recently, I took it in to get the neck adjusted and have a fret dress done. The guy did a great job and the neck feels a whole lot better. But now, I have this weird frequency buzz going on with my G string and to some extent my A string. It sounds almost as if the string is playing two notes simultaneously for about a second. This is creating a harsh beating sound as I guess because the two sound waves are pounding against each other. After a second, one of the frequencies dissipates and the sound becomes pure again. In any event, ITS ANNOYING! I've noticed also that the beating gets more prominent the further up on the neck say between frets 14 through 24. I'm almost positive that it is not because of frequency interaction with the other strings. I have muted all of them and I still get the same buzzing. I am also pretty sure that is not because of fret buzzing. The neck is perfectly straight. Now I don't know if this indicates that something is loose in the saddle or what. Any suggestions would be helpful, as I am by no means an expert at guitar repair.

Re: Weird Frequency Buzzing

By all means check everything is secure just in case, but it sounds as though the pickups may have been adjusted a bit high.
If the pickups are too high, especially single coils, then the string vibration is effected by the pull of the pickup poles.
Try lowering the neck and single coil pickups a bit.

what bridge does it have, the lo pro saddles sometimes vibrate and you can hear the "rattle" through the amp.

Re: Weird Frequency Buzzing

Thanks Jim. It seems that it does have something to do with the pickup height and I am guessing that it also has to do with the frequencies floating around in the room from the other electronics. Its definitely the single coil thats doing it though. I notice that the magnets corresponding to the G string and the D string are higher than the remainder. Is there any way to adjust those and, if so, how do I do it? Thanks.

You can't adjust the height of the poles individually, all you can do is screw the whole pickup down. Steve Vai usually has the single coil lowered pretty much so the plastic casing is level with the pickguard. Partly to prevent these overtones and also so it doesn't get in the way of his picking.

You can see how low in just above the E of EVO...

Re: Weird Frequency Buzzing

Another funny thing that can happen from time to time is the trem springs can resonate when a certain note is played... not really a big deal and easy to fix (pack the back cavity full of foam) but it'll drive you f!@#£&$g bugnuts.

I have that problem with an old Strat, has been a quirk of the guitar since I bought it, aways seems to happen when I play a low C. No big deal though.
