What is a good way to lower a locking nut with no shims?

just as title says.
ive got a neck that i bought from ebaey and also a locking nut of approprate radius and size. I have tried a large file but it was a very tedius and difficult task and did not remove much wood. i think i will need to remove at least 2mm of wood!

thanks guys!

Don't remove wood from the neck! File the nut because if you mess that up, it can easily be replaced.

Just take your time and measure as you go.

File a locking nut? Are you nuts???

File the nut pocket. Be patient and careful and always inspect your work as you go along.
You'll probably need an exacto knife to sharpen the corners.
(I did it many times...)

Good work!

First I'd buy a correct nut for the neck. But I don't think there are many necks that exist you can take 2mm out of the nut channel without hitting the truss rod end. Grind the nut.

I have done so in a Wizard II neck from my Ibanez RG-470. I bought a OFR Pro bridge + nut pack and the nut was a bit too high.
I had to file about 2mm of wood from the neck with no problem at all. It has good clearence for the truss-rod to be adjusted.

But I guess it depends...

Check out whether you can file 2mm of wood from your neck.

I can pretty much guarantee you won't take 2mm off an MIJ neck, and why would anybody want to screw with the expensive part when you can thin the cheap part down much more easily...... Much less taking structural strength off the thinnest part of a neck to begin with.

Yes, mine is MIK. But I don't think that structurally it was affected!

Ok, then... screw the whole neck up!
The best way to experiment is in cheap parts! Go for it!
