It's either a small thin piece of wood, plastic, or even a matchbook that's used to adjust the angle of a bolt-on neck. It's placed underneath the neck in the neck pocket near the lowest screws.

Toneboy mentioned a couple things a shim can be made out of..
but be careful using the wood or matchbook as he said..
because those items will get crushed as you put pressure on them.

I got a good tip recently to use a razorblade or equivalent.

remember not every neck needs a shim, nor is every neck designed to have a shim

Emery paper works well for shimming as the course grainy side helps the connection between the two surfaces. Good for locking nut shims and neck joint shims.
