Question

Why uncover the springs cavity?

I've seen a lot of times, Jimi Hendrix being the first, that some guys simply remove the cover of the springs cavity on the back of the guitar.
What's the advantage of doing this?

Some folks, like Hendrix, would do things to the springs (like "strum" them with a pic) to make sound effects.

One some guitars it's easier to restring the guitar without the cover on.

Some of us (like myself) set up our own guitars and after a few of them decide not to put the back plate on for convenience... and laziness

This is my reason....laziness mostly...but yeah, it's so I don't have to unscrew it when I want to make a little adjustment to the springs

I prefer to think of it as faster than just being lazy, but, maybe a bit of both

Re: Why uncover the springs cavity?

maybe that's the reason the actual covers has those cavities for adjusting the springs without removing the cover.
it's a nice improvement, anyway the buttons of my shirt sometimes 'lushes' into those cavities!

That is part of my new guitar set up...

Remove spring cover and place in parts box.

I thought it was something about springs resonance, blocked by your belly and t-shirt, or some noble stuff like that.

Hey, so that's all about laziness?
So you mean all that professional roadies are a bunch of lazy guys?
Guess I found the perfect job to me

Re: Why uncover the springs cavity?

well i think that the guitar techs don't put it back to cut times when it comes to change strings in a hurry or last second setup twinkings. there's no point to fasten those darn 6 screws anytime, even with an electric fastener (or how you call it).

Why would you take the cover off when changing strings? Anyway, I tend to leave them on after I finish a good setup as I won't be needing to get in there in the near future. Also, using the cover allows you to place a small piece of foam in the cavity to stop the springs from resonating on certain chords and notes. Now if I use a Tremel-No on a guitar, the cover will stay off and I have a Tom Anderson custom that never got one and I can't bring myself to drill into that beautiful mahogany...

Agree with this one. I put mine back on to save my guitar from *possible* damage and bits of dirt/dust finding their way into there.
