width of a 6 string vs that of a 7 string ibanez body

Hey guys, quick question- i'm thinking about trying to build a 7-string guitar (rg7/universe shaped) and i wanted to know, is there an actual difference in the shape of the rg6 and rg7 bodies besides the obvious differences in the neck pocket and body cavities? The reason i ask is because i have an rg550 body that i could just trace if there is no difference.

I'm sure someone else could add to this, but they should be the same except that around the neck joint (I know you mentioned that) there seems to be a difference in the way they approach it, so if you just trace the whole body and then make your neck joint wider, it wouldn't really fit right. It's not something you have to measure or anything, you can just look at a catalog or photos here on jemsite to compare. The "real" dimensions of the outside of the body should be the same, except for factory tolerances.

I'm not quite sure if i get what you're saying- I have noticed that there appears to be something different about the shape of the universe body, but if you say that the dimesions are the same, wouldn't the tracing work? Or are you saying that the curvature of the cutaways is actually different and that other parts of the body are the same?

On another note, does anyone here have a Universe blueprint or know the exact differences between the body designs? I would like to be as precise as possible.

You guys are on the right track....the bodies are the same dimensions. One is routed to acommodate 6 strings and the other for 7 strings.

This would be for the AANJ bodies ONLY. The standard neck style bodies are different in the neck and cutaway areas.

Cool, thanks- so if i just traced my rg550 (AANJ) body it would have the same outer dimensions as a universe?

Yes ;-)

I have several factory AANJ bodies here and I have found no difference in the shape (outline) of the bodies.
