Wiring Help Needed!! - For S540

I've taken out the DiMarzio pickups for my S540, now i have a problem putting back the stock pickups - i don't know which wires goes where on the 5-way switch!!

The wiring diagram on the ibanez site doesn't seem to help either... anyone have a simpler diagram?

Wiring Help Needed!!

eeeeek! the wiring diagram i got of ibanez is probably the same! The selector switch can be a bit confusing to wire eh? Do this:

1)Choose a pickup configuration you like (or just go with the old configuration, get that of the website)

2)Draw the out the wiring. (you should be able to work out which lead from the humbuckers is the humbucker output, and which one the split (single coil) output.

3)with a resistance meter, figure out which pads on the selector switch correspond to which position, and which is the output (bottom most pad, i think).

4)If I remember correctly, the switch in the s540 is one of those 4-plate things (4 rows of 6pads, 2 each side). Each plate is like an independant switch, which means if you plan it out a bit, that you can some pretty cool wirings. To make things more interesting the switch seems to have reverse ordering on one 2 of the plates.

5)Work out how you are going to wire the selector switch. (This is where the wiring diagram will help). Note that you might end up having wires go from one plate to another...

The switch is a bit of a bitch to work out, as I don't think there are any clear marks on it, but once you've worked out which pads correspond to which selector switch position you can work it out, as long as you know which wire is which from the pickups.

I don't know if this helps, but I had the same problem ages ago while putting EMG's in. I found the best way was to work it out for yourself and by trial and error...

Good Luck!

Wiring Help Needed!!

check for diagrams at

http://www.stewmac.com
http://www.dimarzio.com

the jem diagrams might help figure it out from the TECH area on this site. Sometimes it's easier to replace the 3/5-way switch to a more simple one (ala allparts or dimarzio) when doing mods... glen

James, why is it the Ibanez diagram doesn't work for you. Is it because your switch doesn't match that in the drawing?

I have had this problem with a few Ibanez guitars. In order to figure it out all our I had to figure out how the switch works. 7DT's tips will work if you have a meter or continuity tester (a light bulb and batter will do). A lot of patience and a little deductive reasoning is required too.
