Woods and Stains

Ok, not giving anything away, but, which woods out of the following would take a stain without a clearcoat well?

- basswood (i know this does, as have the BSB)
- swamp ash
- alder
- ash

I know mahogony is too dark and it has to be a light coloured wood.

Also, which colours stain well? Not looking at yellows but possibly greens, reds, and really do want a vibrant colour.

ANd lastly, is there anywhere that sells the stuff to stain wood with, and what's the stain stuff called?

And to anyone that's done it, how much is needed to stain a whole guitar?

Washburn N4s are currently Swamp Ash and stained and look great, I think. The older Alder ones looked fine as well.

They're not stained a colour are they? Just looked on the site and it's showing natural finish?

Re: Woods and Stains

Yeah I'd avoid the basswood. I think ash and alder look kinda the same . . . natural finish strats are usually ash if I'm not mistaken.
