Thumbs up

It's only fair

Since we have David Gilmour, Joe Strummer, Rory Gallagher, and Alvin Lee relic replica axes,
I think we need a run, however limited, of these:

C'mon, it's only fair.

hmmm, so if a new jem7vwh costs like 2 grand and the only differences from it to a high end RG are inlays, lions claw and monkey grip...would i pay an extra 2 grand for a jem7vwh with lots of dings in it?

actually, some people probably would but you get my point.

The last thing the world needs is another grossly overpriced "signature" guitar.

Re: It's only fair

Better off getting a standard RG and do your art signature on it....no difference with the
artists signature guitar...just a cosmetic actually...

No, I am sure plenty of people would like it. However, you would have to spend $10,000 to get one, and that is the joke.

Buy a used Jem, and do it yourself. Save several thousand, and have something truly rare.

Re: It's only fair

I guess I just kind of figured that the market is there for these sorts of things. I mean, it would make more since than the "Inspired by" Keifer Sutherland guitar that Gibson put out a few years ago. To me, it would seem that Steve Vai would be one of the only non-Fender, non-Gibson players to deserve a look alike. Maybe Kirk Hammet, but he really doesn't have a main axe. ESP already gave George Lynch one, as well as James Hetfield, for some reason since he doesn't really play the guitar they relic'd and put his name on. And if Yngwie is getting the Duck replica made, then clearly there is a market for shredders to have their axes reproduced. I guess that's where I was coming from with this one.

I hate when companies like fender or Gibson put out relic'd sigs but I really want an EVO!!! Except I'd prefer that it wasn't relic'd to the point where there is an actual crack running through the body

I love my Rory Gallagher relic. Never listened to any of his music but the strat absolutely rocks and I love the relic job. But they are nitro, like all the relics. I think you might have a hard time trying to relic a poly finish seeing how it shatters like glass and unpredictably.

Grossly over priced? Are you talking about Steve's JEM guitars?
I don't agree with with your statement.

not to start another firefight, but there have been a few threads/posts discussing that when you weigh up the price of a new JEM vs new high end RG, the extra features on the JEM don't equate to the extra price.

You forgot neck profile. and while not "better" than any other dimarzios, no RGs come with Evolutions or breeds. Not that I think that's worth the difference in price at all.

I'd like to see a guitar like this, but not buy one.

You'd think Satch deserves one too, but his guitars usually look really clean and he doesn't use one more than all others so he's out.

Re: It's only fair

I met Steve Vai back in 1979. I was working on his Fender Strat (along with Frank Zappa's guitars too) quite offten at the time. This is long before Steve join the Ibanez team.
He was (and still is) always very kind to me and also he taught me a lot about what is "Great playing / sounding guitar" means. He loves his fans and really care about them.
I don't speak for him but I know one thing for sure though.
He will not approve any guitar with his name on them if quality is not met.
I don't want go in to details of how his guitars are made but I think I know what I'm talking about. Thank you very much for your kind support.
