:!: Let's all compile different styles:!:

Hi all! I though that it would be a great idea if we all put up everything that we know about different styles of music other than our formal Western Music (Rock, Blues, Jazz, Funk, ect.) I'm talking about stuff like Japanese music, Celtic, German, ect. especially styles with weird notes and time and hey signatures. I know that they exist but it's a bitch trying to find them!
Let's get started.

Good idea!
I think I have some middle-eastern scales written down somewhere... I'll try to find them. So, get your fretless axes and ouds out of the cases!

At least one way of expanding guitar horizons is to play stricktly on one or two strings (a sitar method) up & down the neck... set up a drone and get going. If you really want sitarlize your playing, use only left hand's index & mid fingers.

Any stuff involving involving Indian percussion stuff is worth checking out... insane stuff!

Tibetan buddhist rites are also cool to listen. The instrumentation is usually voices, misc percussion and bass trumpets (!). The method of composing they use is approximately this: A Master goes and meditates, and when he enters a trance/enlightened state, he starts singing. The disciples transcribe the stuff on the fly...

Hazrat Inayat Kahn has written several books on music, they give some insight to the eastern (sufi) philosophy of music. Did you know that early Indian musicians were all free improvisers?

It's kinda funny that eastern music rarely is 'in tune', or the tuning of instruments is very approximate. A couple of thousand years ago they even tuned their sitars to birds singing! If you check out the instruments/pics of the instruments that the mid-east people use to make music, you clearly see that pitch isn't exactly their first concern. But that is a part of that 'ethnic' sounds they make.

I'll try to dig up something about Scandinavian folk music as well.

I also dig Jewish music, Klezmer, Hasidic tunes and stuff... I'd like to explore that stuff more. Neo-klez stuff is available on John Zorn's Tzadik label, usually categorized under the name of Radical Jewish Culture. Check out Masada, New Kelzmer Trio, Satlah... pretty cool stuff.
Also Hasidic New Wave uses Jewish tradition. And there's David Fiuczynski who's studied eastern music, so his playing might be a good example how to use those sounds in a more western context.
Anyone have any idea what the early christian music was like?

I could try to encode some stuff to mp3 during the weekend but I don't know about the copyright issues... don't want anyone to start hunting my arse down for such. I do have some Indian perc stuff, oud music and Tibetan rite ****e somewhere, and I'd be happy to share some clips.
If not otherwise, I could e-mail you some files.

Oh btw check out www.digelius.com .

I've ordered a fretness neck from a local luthier, I expect it to arrive next week or so... it's going to be fun! It's gonna be one with "virtual" frets, ie. fret slots filled with maple and sanded level with the ebony board, so it's slightly easier to play those micro-intervals in a tonal context as well. I've also tried out an oud, that thing is just hypnotic. Gotta get myself one someday.
