?? Teaching a beginner - Chord Changes

Ok heres the story. I've been teaching my younger cousin now for a little over a month. He's never played guitar before, but he has about 6 years trumpet experience.

When I've been teaching him scales and excersise like that he has no problem, and picks up at what I believe to be at a normal pace. I've taught him major and minor chords (in the open positions) and he has no problems memorizing or playing them.

Where he struggles, and maybe because I'm not going about this the right way, is making chord changes. I started teaching him something I thought would be easy, 3 Doors Down's Kryptonite, but the chord change from B to G is problematic.

I also taught him Van Halen's 316, which at a "slow" pace he can handle, but at normal speed the chord changes jus aren't happening.

Is there something I can be doing to help him progress that maybe I'm not thinking of.

BTW, all of the lessons thus far are strictly acoustic, I haven't even let him hold an electric yet.

the only way to make chord changes smooth, is to practice them.

so I would say for example start like this...

4/4 time stum each chord 4 times counting 1,2,3,4,1,2...
B G B G ://repeat 16 times.

next go to half note strums each chord is strummed twice and then a change.
B G B G :// repeat 16 times

then move on to quater note strums, one strum then chord change.
BGBG :// repeat 16 times.

you get the point. Then he'll learn not only chord changes, but basic rythme as well.

just my thoughts...
