10 solos for intermediate/ advanced guitar player

Hi there , i´ve playing for 3 years and I can do many thing with the guitar , like tappings, vibratos, emotional bends ,play with my teeth, with the guitar im my back, but , in solos, i usually play some parts of the original than ad my thing to the solo, can you guys tell me 10 great solos for me to learn to play lick by lick ? thanks

hmm im torn.

id love to be the pompous music dick who says, "dont learn any, add your own flavor to the song and come up with something original to make the song yours." but then i realized i wouldnt be where i was unless i learned a few solos note for note.

these will give you a good range of styles that you can draw from and will also give you some pet licks. i suggest you listen to these recordings first then try to learn them.

1. charlie parker - donna lee (the penultimate bebop solo, teach you some harmony too, its played really really fast check out the bassist Jaco Pastorius' version too, best bassist ever)
2. joe satriani - satch boogie
3. jimi hendrix - all along the watchtower
4. pink floyd - echoes (the beginning ones) and money
5. yngwie malmsteen - black star (lets face it, its a necessary evil, yngwie's a dick, but every aspiring great guitarist nowadays has to go thru him, admit it, we all went through our yngwie phases).

Indeed, I'm still going through my whingey phase 10 years after first hearing that album. I played this very track with an orchestra backing recently!!
Being co-in-charge of a youth orchestra has it's advantages

Pure solo's to learn lick by lick... hmmmm

1) Cemetery Gates - Pantera
2) Go To Hell - Megadeth (ok, that's lots of little solo's!)
3) Bone Down - T-Ride (ok, I know its an instrumental and not just a solo, but it's short and the rhythm is soooooo tight I think it'd be a challenge)

Here are some solos that I've liked and learned:

1) Satriani - At least the solos from the following tunes: 'Motorcycle driver', 'Until We Say Goodbye', 'The Forgotten (part2)' (but there are _many_ more..)
2) Steve Vai - every lead guitar part on Passion & Warfare, and later Sex & Religion and Alien Love Secrets
3) Dream Theater (John Petrucci) - every solo on 'Images & Words' and 'Awake', especially the solo from 'Under a Glass Moon'
4) Yngwie - Crystal Ball etc.
5) Megadeth - Tornado of Souls etc.
6) Paganini's Caprice #24
7) Petra - Last Daze (!)
8) Extreme (Nuno Bettencourt) - Most of the solos on records II & III.
9) Eric Johnson - Cliffs of Dover (the whole song)
10) anything you can find by Brett Garsed, Frank Gambale and Michael Lee Firkins

And you can learn more complete songs like Satriani's Always with me, Always with you or Vai's Die to live (these two are one of the easiest of Satch & Vai songs to play).

I can't believe that nobody's mentioned Vai's 'Ladies Nite in Buffalo' solo from his DLR period yet! Sounds great, and is a great source of 'cut out and keep' licks.

I'll second anything by Pink Floyd - Money, Another Brick in the Wall part 2 and especially Comfortably Numb. Dave Gilmour is the king of melodic solos.

Learn Vai's 'Hand on Heart' too - great song.

Yep, people do it. Jimi Hendrix, SRV, Vai, Joe Stump, Yngwie...many of the flashy guitar players do it as a guitar trick. Its verrrry akward at first, and It's a thing you have to really learn on your own, but it tons of fun once you know what your doing.
