I did a search on this website but could not find anything. What is this technique and how do you do it?

8 Finger Tapping?

I'm not quite sure what you mean. *But it might have to do with utilizing the left hand and 3 fingers of the right. *(Like on a solo with Steve when he switches strings that he taps on like in the solo of Ba Horsie or something) *It might just be a more economical way of tapping with different strings so that you don't have to learn to switch strings so quick.
That or you got anotehr guy to play on your guitar while your playing to get the 8 fingers on there...:silly:

8 Finger Tapping?

The only thing I'd heard referred to as "8 finger tapping" was a technique Jeff Watson used to use in Night Ranger. *The 2 songs I know of are "Rock in America" and "7 Wishes". *His was a limited technique, though - basically a fast repetitive scale run on one string using 6-8 fingers.

Stanley Jordan uses 2 handed tapping to achieve contrapuntal lines on one guitar. *Very impressive. *There are a few rock guys who do that, too, but I forget their names. *I'd like to hear that, too, since in rock it would have to be harder to make that work. *There's more going on sonically, and heavy distortion doesn't like dissonant intervals...

8 Finger Tapping?

TJ Helmerich is a master of 8-finger tapping, and it is primarily all he does, at least in a lead context. His left hand (the normal fretting hand) is used primarily to support, extend lines, and create wide intervals, while he does most of the scalar legato things, which most people would do with their left hand, with his right. He does all his vibrato and bending with his left hand though, so it has that particular sound you get when you bend a tap from behind. Helmerich's technique is miles beyond what Watson was exploring.

Check out the album Quid Pro Quo by Brett Garsed and TJ Helmerich if you are really interested in it. Plus its worth getting just to listen to Garsed.

I also recommend Stanley Jordan if you're interested in two hand tapping technique. His stuff, technique-wise, is quite outside the day-to-day. Very cool, however.
