A good CHUNKY theory book!
Hey all, i'm off on holiday soon with my mum and dad so my 2 weeks will probably involve sitting around the pool with not much to do..
I'm looking for a good
CHUNKAY
theory book involving scales, modes and chords if possible. Basically any good book that'll do into music theory in depth. I don't mind if it's about notation, rhythm, pitch or all of the usual topics, i just want something that i'll be able to get stuck into and will also be beneficial without actually having a guitar at hand!
If you could give me some suggestions then that would be great.
Thanks all

The Guitar Grimoire
series are really reference books, but they are incredibly useful for memorizing how scales and modes differ from and relate to each other. You'll just have to apply yourself a bit more, since it doesn't tell you what you should be doing.

guitar grimoire is hard as hell to get into because it is probably the most boring book of all time.
if you dont have your axe at hand, try any basic harmony book, i like harmony and form, i forget who its by, ill post later at home. its basic, but solid fundamentals will reap rewards down the line. i only wish i paid more attention in harmony I

I've got a nice selection now (=
I've got the 'AB guide to music theory 'parts 1 and 2, and 'Harmony in Practice' by Anna Butterworth <<great book, it's like a reference and question book with a seperate answer book, about 300 pages too =D
Great stuff!

GAH!!!
i dont get the whole thing with this guitar grimoire. there are other books, for example single line soloing by ted greene, that adress scales in a much better fashion than the grimoire. and greene's book didnt put me to sleep after 15 minutes. the grimoire is good if you dont know a scale after playing for 6 months and only have 2 minutes to learn that scale, but outside of that its useless. it adresses nothing on how to use the scales and it barely goes into detail about how modes are related to minor/major scales.
i guess my big beef with it is its just reference, you cant absorb material that will help you be a better musician, its just a big boring book.
