A question about trems and sounds... Please help

Hi all,
There's a question that i couldn't answer from my researches results. I think you all know the sounds JS does when he finishes the entry part of Satch Boogie. He pushes the whammy bar up with his left hand, and a really high pitched sound comes out. Now that's the question. How do I do it? Don't tell me push the bar up I've tried and I broke a string once. Please help, i really to know...

Thanks in advance

Do you mean the sound at 0:33? He plays a harmonic with the bar depressed, then releases it, pulls it up, then goes back down again.

Using your left hand to hold the bar down is just for show. It's just as easy to do it with your right hand.

hell yes, it's an harmonic but how the hell can he pick the note and instantly use his right hand to push the bar? The sound seemed harmonic before but i never tried it, because i was convinced it was someting else... thank guys

As far as I know the following should do it.

I think Satch uses a natural harmonic that he picks using a pinch technique using his right hand only. I think that this would be just over the neck PU. I guess it would be the equivalent of the 24th fret (if he uses 22 fret guitars) or 27th fret. I actually got this technique from a tuition video (from the man himself) that I got free with a guitar mag.

That should give you the basic screaming harmonic, then just use the trem accordingly. Not to be patronising, but if you depress the trem first with your left hand then sharply raise pitch as/after you sound the harmonic, it rocks; and I think he uses that alot.

I hope that is useful, and that I wasn't stating the obvious.

Now if anyone can tell me how to get a Zakk Wylde type scream I would be happy.

(Supposing I know what you mean) aren't those just pinch harmonics too? Done by adding a bit of your thumb in with the pick attack to knock down the fundamental immediately after the pick strikes -- "immediately after" being whatever nanoseconds it takes for the pick to pass over the string and for the string to be hit by the thumb that's holding the pick.

Now, exactly how he gets those super-duper harmonics on the low E string with that wide vibrato in for instance, that Crazy Babies riff... you got me, I can't nail it. (Mostly it's the vibrato that I can't do, but I think those harmonics might also be slightly easier to get on a Les Paul than on an Ibanez RG for some reason -- and the vibrato might be a tad easier as well, since the string tension is slightly less due to the shorter scale length, but my fingers seem too weak and slow to do it like he does.)

i can nail zakk style pinches, even on 10-60's... just takes some strong fingers and good vibrato skills... and on a lot of his BLS stuff his low string is tuned to a B, so that helps a lot too...

You don't play the harmonic, then grab the bar. You start with the bar depressed, then hit the harmonic.

I can get the Zakk Wylde scream in general. I am really trying to get the start of Demon Alcohol. I can just about get it, but not reliably. I have actually built a custom ZW Les Paul, and I am getting there with practice.

Back to topic. I think that the video was in Total Guitar a couple of months ago. I wonder if it is on the web site?

This is basically Joe's trademark now a days.
