Advice on Satch Tapping

I was wondering,what is the proper way to do that fast tapping thing,that Satriani does,with the pick.I can do this,but the way I do it is by tensing my arm so it shakes ultra fast,is this the correct way or is Satriani just cool?

It might sound odd, but practice it without using the guitar..

Put your wrist onto you desk/table whatever with a pick in your hand and pretend that you are hitting the strings of your guitar repeatedly,

The key to this technique is to be very loose and not to think too much about what you are doing, its one of those techniques where the harder you try, the worse it sounds...
