Here's an exercise I like to use for combining inside and outside picking.
G- * * * * *1 2 4 2 1 * * * * * * * * * *2 3 5 3 2 * * * * * * * * *
D- *1 2 4 * * * * * * *4 2 1 **2 3 5 * * * * * * * 5 3 2 * etc.....
You begin the exercise with a down stroke and use
alternate picking throughout on the D and G strings. Obviously, the first phrase uses outside picking but the second phrase* uses inside picking (and of course it employs a position-shift each time). *Continue the same motif all the way up as far as your fretboard will allow and then come all the way back down. It's quite the little workout!
