Bad Habits?

Since I've recently begun to play guitar again after a long hiatus, I've been going through the scales and I've noticed that I'm doing something.
When a particular scale requires me to move my fingers from whatever position they're in, sometimes I slide over to the next note.
For example, let's say I'm playing C Minor, as I'm working my way down the 8th fret, when I get to the third string I have to slightly shift to hit D note of the 7th fret. No problem there. But when I work my way back up, I use my index finger for the Eb and slide it over to hit the D. (I hope all this makes sense)

Anyway, I didn't know if this was a bad habit to have. Should I break myself of it or just chalk it up to my particular "technique".

For easy reference, I've been using this as and aid:

Also, on this webpage, what is meant by Ascending and Descending for the Melodic Minor scale?

Re: Bad Habits?

I wouldnt say its bad as much as it might slow you down.
Keep trying different fingerings!

In classic music theory ascending melodic minor has maj6 and and maj7, and descending melodic minor has min6 and min7.

Re: Bad Habits?

While I'm thinking about it, how does one distinguish between technique and bad habits anyway? I've noticed that there are certain things that I do while I'm playing a solo and I'm not sure if they are one of those things that create "my unique sound" or if they are bad habits. Any thoughts?

I believe it was Mike Stern who said "The beautiful thing about music, is that style isnt so much defined by what you can do as much as what you CANT"
So true.
