Re: basic sweeping.

Basic scalar shape (C-major):

E-----------15-12--------
B--------13------13------
G-------12---------12----
D-----14-------------14--
A---15-----------------15
E-------------------------

For starters you might have a go at a 3-string shape though:

E-----14-12----
B---13-----13--
G-12---------12

Your best bet would be tracking down some tabs for Jason Becker (Serrana), or Paganini stuff.

Re: basic sweeping.

It is simply impossible to properly learn 5 string sweeps when you don't even have the basic 3 string shapes down.

http://www.insaneguitar.com/mc/sweeping.html

I used that page to learn to sweep, and I'm now just able to do the basic 5 string minor sweep.

E-----------11h15p11--------
B---------13---------13------
G-------12------------12-----
D-----13----------------13---
A---15--------------------15-
E-----------------------------

But yeh learn 3 string ones. Once you've got those progressing is so much easier.

Re: basic sweeping.

make sure you know what chord tones you are hitting on the sweeps too. are you on your root, 3rd, or 5th? for example, on pawel's c major shape, you have C (root), E (major 3rd), G (perfect 5th). then you can start to change that major to a minor by flatting the third. or add the 7th (B) to make it a major 7th arpeggio. and then the 9th, 11th and so on. of course, make sure you've got the basics down first, but don't get stuck on the same sweeps over and over once you're comfortable playing them. a lot of players only know minor, major and diminished and becomes kind of limiting/boring after 20 yrs of playing the same thing, like yngwie (ouch, zing!.........sorry about that hahahaha)

Re: basic sweeping.

...I also would say to start on the sweeps that begin with the first finger, perhaps a hammer on into the next note...sweeps that start with the pinky are tricky for a beginner.

The tough thing I find with 3 note sweeps is that the right hand wants to sweep too fast...I don't run into that with more note sweeps....but they are good to start with.
