depends what kind of music theory you're looking for.

im studying classical harmony and form which is an in depth study of analyzation and 4 part writing. it doesnt have too much of a musical function seeing as i play jazz, but its great to know and your appreciation of classical music will be enhanced tenfold when you listen and know whats going on between the harmony and melody instead of just listening the to melody and thinking, "gee, thats pretty." i forget the author, ill post it when i get home, but the book is Harmony and form.

if your interested in more modern music theory, and its application to the guitar, then Mick Goodrick has a great book out called the Advancing Guitarist. its comprehensive and has a lot about chord progressions and scales. it does require knowledge of staff music.

i dont know of any books for jazz theory seeing as i wont take that until next year.

there are some other books that ive got at home, but i cant remember their names, ill post later and give you that.

Fretboard Logic series by Bill Edwards is a good choice.... he has a vhs/dvd to go along with his 3 volume series.... its a great system.

Its basis all fretboard knowledge on the CAGED system.

Its very easy to understand, and I am told it is the foundation of music theory taught in Europe, meanwhile many USA institutions are still teaching the same old, Dorian, Mixolydian, Lydian...etc...etc... greek island names to new students.

Of course these names have relevance, as they take on a new feeling or mode, but lets not confuse the issue.....

D dorian, E phrygian, and B Locrian are still just notes from one scale....C major.

This is the logic behind Fretboard Logic.... and it makes a lot of sense to beginner's.

The Guitar Grimoire series books and dvds is a nice place to go after you have Fretboard Logic under your belt.

Mick Goodrick's "Advancing Guitarist" is exactly what the name implies... it is a very advanced book. If you can't read music, then you will only use this book at about 30% of its possibility.

However, I feel this book to be more of a "guitar philosophy" then in some ways useful. It does make you think.......ie: Goodrick in the first chapter will tell you: "Spend time just playing one string on your guitar, think of all the possibilities, master that 1 string."

While Goodrick brings up a great point that one string of our guitar, can produce , through hammer on's, pull off's, reverse bends, trills..etc..etc... more posibilities than we usually consider..... let alone 6 (or 7).

I feel the other books will get you much more on your way.
I'm strong willed as hell, but if the "Advancing Guitarist" was the first book on theory.... I probably would have gave up the guitar...and took up Quantum Physics, as it TRULY is easier to comprehend than the Goodrick book.

Work your way up to that book, Mr. Goodrick certainly has a quality book.... but it is, in my opinion, for a dedicated, advanced intermediate player/theorist who is ready to be a well advanced player/theorist.

Hope this helps.

I have 90% of every instructional book....video....dvd....or system produced in the last 20 years... I would be more than happy to give you a honest review of any item. I have some videos/dvds I could recommend as well... I have over 200 in my personal collection, and have viewed all of them many times...... I love to soak up all the info I can from high quality players.....

You will become what you study and educate yourself on!!!
If you study fantastic guitar players on a regular basis..... you will become the best you can be.

Good Luck!

if you really want to learn about music theory try pick up a proper text on it like "twentieth century harmony" by persichetti (sp) takes you from scratch up to where music theory is right now.

if its just modes and scale patterns your looking for then you should find everything you need online
