Breaking free

hello, ive been playing for about 7 years now, and ive really just started "mapping" modes over the entire neck, i love the fact that you can spot shapes within the major scale patterns and its really unlocked some good things for me, however im just wondering how i can get out of the rut that i find myself in all the time, how can i expand my playing further, is it a case of just learning the patterns and getting on with it. If anyones experienced this rut (probably all of you) can you please give me some advice or recommend some books i can get to take me further. I pretty much improvise all the time, but just need something to unlock more potential if you know what i mean, im rambling now goodbye

ahahah, its a pi55er aint it! you get quite good then get stuck. balls. i just found some exotic scales on harmony central, and im mapping them on the board, some weird ones in there the enigmatic scale is an arse, just trying to get some more inspiration. I actually went off vai for a bit, but then i saw the live at the astoria dvd, my god, ive never seen vai apart from the g3 vid, he's a brilliant performer, never realised he was that crazy, that kick started me a bit. thats always been the best thing for me being inspired by watching great musicians, i think it started when i first saw hendrix do that improv at woodstock, blew me away.
