chord progressions - ones that make sence

There are thousands of chords, but when I'm writing a chord progression, that will back up a solo, how do I know which chords can be used in the progression to still keep the progression in the same key? Thanks. Matt

chord progressions

Oh man. *There are a thousand ways to look at this...I don't really want to be the one who types out the huge post about the very basic chord construction that fits a key.

What I will do is wait until someone DOES exhaust themself with such. Then I'll add my personal takes on things you can do and ways you can think to pick some chords you can use, add extensions to chords, or borrow chords from other keys, etc.

But first let us clarify something. *Do you already have a solo completely written with no chords? *Or do you just have a key that you want to solo in and need chords to play over?

I see many posts in the future of this thread.

Okay, I think I can answer this question in one word: counterpoint. *Check out a good theory book, start from two-part harmony and work to four part harmony; that should be a fairly good start into chord theory. *It might take three or four months, though.
