fast single notes of course. chords are for pussies.

just like the hammer-ons vs pull-offs thread.. it's the pussiness of a hammer beating the fretboard compared to pulling off.. i think we all know who won that debate.

When you play a single note over a chord, it adds to the chord. That's called orchestration!

Only time you dont have chords is if you have a single instrument playing one note at a time. And I can't say that's very interesting...

Re: Chords Or Single Notes which do you prefer???

Well technically if you play a single note over a chord (unless it's a note within the chord), you have another chord (or a dischord). Hee.

The orchestration with the shredders is between the bass, keyboards if any, rhythm and lead guitars - you don't often just hear the lead unaccompanied. While they don't use that many chords, they tend to have plenty of double stops to add some meat to the bones. Nevertheless, the sound you hear on the albums and live isn't exactly sparse - it's an ensemble arrangement you're listening to, not a true solo.

Smartarsedness aside though, if you're on your own you won't sound too exciting on a single note basis. Which is better? As many opinions as there are musicians.

What kind of ridiculous question is that? I like melody and harmony that sounds good. And what is this "shredders like Vai and Satriani like single notes" statement? Listen to Boston Rain Melody and say that again. Neither of them are "shredders"

I did phrase that incorrectly i should have said "Virtuoso's", it is inapproriate to call them shredders they are both fast BUT they have great melodies the both of them, i was just refering to their speed i didn't take into account the melodies they both created. So i'll fix my original post.

Ok if i re-wrote the question would it be a stupid question:

If you wrote a song would the piece you play have more chord progressions, or more single note melodies or a solid mix of both, taking into account that it is just you NO other guitarist, just a bass and drummer behind you to keep up a rhythm?

But it Doesn't matter now.

I personally didn't think it was that stupid of a question at the time, take someone who plays at like 25 notes a second or so when they are at full speed after listening to notes scrambled up together for a few minutes it becomes too much and you get sick of it. It Has no rythmic pulse has no melody, just arpeggios jumbled together and called "Music".

If you have melody and a nice catchy rythm then it doesn't matter what your playing beacuse it all sounds good.

But in terms of sound a Chord does sound more "filling" and has more "grunt" to it, does it not, then compared that to a set of notes played over and over, sure you can make arpeggios sound really good but they will never have the Sound that a chord can produce.

A set of notes, and a set of chords that are played sound completely different from each other.Thats what my original question was about. 2 different distinct sounds.

Im trying not be a smartarse or anything sorry if you think i am, im just trying to state my original thesis point that i had so that the question doesn't sound as stupid. I believe that chords and notes sound different and each will have a different sound, even with added effects and everything else, notes can have beautiful melodies and chords can me manipulated to what ever style you play, same for notes.

I couldn't agree more...... In the context you put this whole thing...... three piece band. No matter what, you still have a rhythmic/chordal structure you're building any melody upon.

I totally agree we are having fun after long thought which is not very long for me this thread is a bit stupid but we can have some fun doesn't always have to be serious , at the time i thought it was a logical question to ask but you guys have more experience and background than i do so my level of thinking is really low compared to everyone on this site.

By the way do you think someone should ban me im not that bad am i

And HeavyMetal4Ever i choose no breathing at all!!

All in good fun.
