Re: clean sound

Well if its clean, it's with overdrive off, if that is a serious question.

Re: clean sound

I think Vai's clean tone comes from his pickups and the amp he's using.

But of course at the end of the day it's the player, I'm sure if you got vai to use a reasonably good and different setup *crap amps and guitars aside * he'll still sound like himself.

I know exactly what you mean when you say you can't figure out his clean tone. I've tried my very best to emulate it especially on the clean parts in tender surrender, but to no avail.

Re: clean sound

tender surrender on clean should be easy to nail

switch your pickups to single coil, add some delay

Judging from when he comes out of solo back to clean, I would say he is using the dirty channel and has rolled off the volume to get the clean sound.

Re: clean sound

I've seen him play the song live and and the ALS dvd (although that's guitar karaoke)...

He's using his bridge pickup most of the time, for the clean parts.

Strange but true.

If I'm not mistaken Mr vai uses tubescreamer to play fast stuff and the boss for some slow ones but I think he uses them to boost the amp distort

I think he uses one of the middle (4th?) positions that is next to the bridge pickup selection, which might look like the bridge pickup is selected.

Re: clean sound

Steve uses the 'out of phase' postions (2 or 4) for alot of his clean work. He doesn't use any effects for his clean sound, just the natural sound of his Carvin Legacy amps.

For the record, positions 2 and 4 are not out of phase. The pickups are in phase. Out of phase generally sound really, thin and weak.

Re: clean sound

On the Astoria DVD, there are 3 heads - could SV switch between them? I think he actually sets his Legacy, so that with the voluem knob on his guitar down to 2 or something, it cleans up nicely, and any extra gain needed is provided by TS/DS-1.

Slightly OT: anyone else experience this: on my H-s-H RG, positions 1 and 5 clean sound muffled, whereas 2,3,4 are nice and crisp, like on a strat.

Also OT, your humbuckers are almost certainly too close to the strings then. Best to start a new thread to discuss.

Re: clean sound

how does he set his tube screamer/ds1 as a boost? is the overdrive on the amp all the way up or something then the pedal is a boost?
