Re: Clear Fast Notes

well It might be your pickups and or amp/amp settings, also i think some of it is legato if i remember right, I just have problems crossing strings because sometimes the open string sounds when i let go with 1st, that is the same problem I have with sweeping sometimes too. I know one thing is you should play it faster than you think because it helps it flow more but it should still be in time since you dont expect it to be that fast. At least it's that way for me.

my gain is set to like 20 or 30 out of 120 (the last 101-120 are called turbo gain lol)
my guess is the gain makes the overtones cause some muddiness or something

Re: Clear Fast Notes

The more gain you have, the more the little things like pick scracthes will become apparent. Vai actually doesn't use much gain.

that tells us the guitars got life

you dont need a hell lot of gain to get a good sound, less gain you use, more guitar's own voice is gonna coem through

Re: Clear Fast Notes

One thing you're not taking into account is his amp setup. His signal is broken in two. Part of it goes to his Carvin amps (1 on each side) to produce a stereo image. The other part is going to a Fender combo amp. The Fender always plays clean. Steve will dial in how much of it is actually present in the mix. So some of what you're hearing is the clean being mixed in with the distorted signal coming thru the Carvins.

If you're playing accurately enough and have about the same amount of gain, then you should be able to sound pretty close to it. Add another amp playing clean for the extra effect.
